Custom Food Pouches: A Practical Guide for 2025

Pouch packaging has become one of the most reliable and adaptable solutions for food brands from start-ups to established names. Whether you're selling snacks, powders, purees or supplements, flexible pouches give you more control over your brand, your shelf life and your fulfilment process. At SPS Pouches, we supply custom food-grade pouches with custom options for size, barrier, print and finish - all tailored to your product and production setup. Here's why more brands are switching to pouches and why it makes sense to source them from a team that knows the technical side of sustainable packaging.

What pouch packaging makes sense for your food product?

If you’re launching a new SKU, running seasonal flavours or scaling up a product line, printed pouches give you flexibility that jars, tubs or cartons simply can’t. We supply a range of options to suit all businesses whether they are just starting out with e-commerce or are established supermarket brands.

Selecting the correct packaging starts with your product's properties and filling process and we are on hand to help you avoid making the mistakes that can lead to unhappy customer and production delays.

We provide three main types of pouch packaging:

Stand-up pouches: For dry items like supplements or snacks, providing stability on shelves.

Spout pouches: For liquids or purées, with dispensing features to reduce mess.

Flat sachets: For samples or single-serves, keeping costs low for trials.

Our pouches are fully customisable so we can add features like zippers or windows as needed and alter materials to meet your shelf life requirements.

What Barrier Properties and Materials Should I Use for Food Pouches

To prevent spoilage, pouches must block oxygen, moisture, and UV. We offer laminates with EVOH or metallised layers for specific high-barrier needs. All of our pouches are compatible with heat-sealing equipment, and we can provide guidance on settings like sealing times (e.g., 2-3 seconds at 140°C).

For most products this is quite straightforward, however sometimes particularly acidic or oily fills require specialised resistant material structures to maintain the integrity of the packaging.

How Can Pouch Packaging Lower My Supply Chain Costs?

Pouches are a lightweight flexible packaging format and reduce weight compared to rigid formats, cutting freight and storage. They collapse flat and suit DTC shipping like Royal Mail Large Letters and we can tailor sizes to suit secondary packaging such as your cartons and boxes.

One of the key other advantages of choosing flexible packaging for food products is that costs drastically reduce as you scale. We offer both digital and gravure printing options to help you incrementally reduce packaging costs as your business grows.

By using HP Indigo technology we've support our customers to avoid plate fees and supply with 2-4 week lead times for short runs from 1,000pcs to 10,000pcs. We can run multiple SKU variants with low MOQs, which is ideal for testing multiple products when launching a business. The quality closely matches gravure printing for most artwork designs, however for high volume runs, gravure printing generally offers a better cost per unit - review our digital vs gravure guide for further details.

Are Recyclable Food Pouches a Practical Choice in 2025?

Yes, with mono-material structures like MDO PE/EVOH/PE and PP based alternatives there in now a recyclable pouch solution for nearly every product. We are pleased that recent innovation in this space is validated by CEFLEX and our food pouches will soon to be kerbside recyclable in the UK thanks to the new FlexConnect Scheme.

The next challenge in this space will be in the retort and microwaveable space as high temperatures and pressures typically require complex material structures.
